With two-thirds of the calories of sugar, sorbitol is the most commonly used and economic polyol sugar substitute (sugar alcohol). Used as a sweetener, sorbitol is a reduced-calorie additive, with 60% of the sweetness of sugar and cooling effect, has also found favor from food manufacturers for its humectant and texturizing properties, particularly in snack foods and beverages.
