Childhood nutrition: Understanding the changing policies, regulations and recommendations

Kristen Dammann, Cargill Regulatory Sr. ScientistChildhood nutrition is top of mind for just about everyone lately -  why? Because research shows that most children in the US don’t meet recommendations for healthy eating or physical activity, and the obesity rates have climbed significantly over the past few decades. Today, nearly 1 in 3 children in America is overweight or obese, which can increase their risk of developing many other health issues later in life.

In the US, a number of mandatory and voluntary programs have already set forth standards or guidelines to help improve children’s diets, including:

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program,
  • Menu Labeling,
  • Guidelines for Food Marketed to Children, and
  • The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

During this information-packed 20 minute session, you will learn about how these new policies, regulations and recommendations are impacting the food industry and how they might affect future food formulations.
